Israel Rejects Amendments to Peace Treaty with Egypt

Israel has rejected the idea of any modification to its 1979 peace treaty with Egypt. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman dismissed any possibility of altering the treaty during a radio interview in Israel Sunday morning. ?There is not the slightest possibility that Israel will accept the modification of the peace treaty with Israel," he said, according to AFP.

Thieves make away with almost 200 iPhone 5s just before they go on sale

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Grammy-winning singer Fiona Apple spent the night in a Texas jail after being arrested late Wednesday on a drug possession charge at a border patrol checkpoint where her tour bus was searched, a local judge said. Apple, 35, was taken into custody in Sierra Blanca, the same small West Texas town where authorities previously nabbed singer Willie Nelson, rapper Snoop Dogg and "The Social Network" actor Armie Hammer on drug charges. The celebrity news website TMZ reported that authorities found hashish, a form of cannabis, on the singer's bus. ...

NOAA's GOES satellite captured Tropical Storm Nadine in the eastern Atlantic, another low pressure area forming in the central Atlantic, and a developing low in the eastern Pacific. NASA's TRMM satellite noticed that the storms around Nadine's center were waning.

On Sept. 21 at 7:45 a.m. EDT, NOAA's GOES-13 satellite captured an image of Tropical Storm Nadine in the eastern Atlantic, and a developing low in the central Atlantic. Nadine is south of the frontal boundary draped across the Azores islands. NOAA's GOES-13 satellite sits in a fixed orbit over the eastern U.S. and captures continuous visible and infrared imagery of the eastern U.S. and the Atlantic Ocean. The image was created by NASA's GOES Project, located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite flew over Tropical Storm Nadine twice on Sept. 21. The first TRMM overpass happened at 0822 UTC (4:22 a.m. EDT) and the second at 1001 UTC (6:01 a.m. EDT). TRMM can see rainfall occurring within a tropical cyclone and noticed that Tropical Storm Nadine's center of circulation has cleared of convection (rising air that forms thunderstorms) and thunderstorms since TRMM passed overhead on Sept. 20. TRMM data on Sept. 21 showed convective rainfall near Nadine's center of circulation had ended and bands of light to moderate rainfall were wrapping around Nadine's southern side. TRMM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japanese Space Agency, and imagery is created at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

At 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT) on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 Tropical Storm Nadine had maximum sustained winds were near 60 mph (95 kph). The center of Tropical Storm Nadine was located near latitude 34.1 north and longitude 27.5 west, about 270 miles (435 km) south of the Azores islands. Nadine is moving toward the south near 10 mph (17 kmh) and is expected to turn toward the southeast followed by a turn east over the weekend of Sept. 22 and 23. Although there is little change expected in Nadine's intensity over the next day or two, the storm could become post-tropical. Forecasters noted that dry air has moved into the center of Nadine's circulation, sapping the energy in the thunderstorms. In addition, sea surface temperatures are hovering near the 26.6 Celsius (80 degree Fahrenheit) threshold needed to keep a tropical cyclone alive.

The Developing Atlantic Low Pressure Area

There's a non-tropical low pressure area in the central Atlantic Ocean that was also picked up on the GOES-13 satellite image from today, Sept. 21. The low is located about 450 miles east of Bermuda and the shower and thunderstorm activity didn't change much from the previous day. This low is tracking to the north-northwest into cooler waters, which will drop its chances for developing into a sub-tropical depression. In the meantime, it has a 50 percent chance of making it to sub-tropical depression status before hitting the cooler waters.

The Developing Eastern Pacific Low Pressure Area

The low pressure area off the western coast of Mexico has a better chance of development than its Atlantic counterpart, and as a tropical depression, not a sub-tropical one. Satellite data show that the low appears to be getting organized and has a visible appearance of circulation. The low is located about 400 miles south of the southern tip of Manzanillo, Mexico and is moving to the west-northwest. The National Hurricane Center noted that conditions are ripe for development with low wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures. There's a 70 percent chance that this low could become the thirteenth tropical depression of the Eastern Pacific hurricane season. If it develops into a tropical storm over the weekend of Sept. 22 and 23, it would be named Miriam.

Gangnam Style: How a quirky South Korean hip-hop artist conquered the world

Gangnam Style, a peculiar South Korean hip-hop video that lampoons a trendy district in Seoul, has become an unlikely global hit.

By Foster Klug,?Associated Press, Youkyung Lee,?Associated Press / September 21, 2012

South Korean rapper PSY's "Gangnam?Style" video has 220 million YouTube views and counting, and it's easy to see why. No Korean language skills are needed to enjoy the chubby, massively entertaining performer's crazy horse-riding dance, the song's addictive chorus and the video's exquisitely odd series of misadventures.

Beneath the antic, funny surface of his world-conquering song, however, is a sharp social commentary about the country's newly rich and?Gangnam, the affluent district where many of them live.?Gangnam?is only a small slice of Seoul, but it inspires a complicated mixture of desire, envy and bitterness.

Here's a look at the meaning of "Gangnam?Style" ? and at the man and neighborhood behind the sensation:

THE PLACE:

Gangnam?is the most coveted address in Korea, but less than two generations ago it was little more than some forlorn homes surrounded by flat farmland and drainage ditches.

The district of?Gangnam, which literally means "south of the river," is about half the size of Manhattan. About 1 percent of Seoul's population lives there, but many of its residents are very rich. The average?Gangnam?apartment costs about $716,000, a sum that would take an average South Korean household 18 years to earn.

The seats of business and government power in Seoul have always been north of the Han River, in the neighborhoods around the royal palaces, and many old-money families still live there.

Gangnam, however, is new money, the beneficiary of a development boom that began in the 1970s.

As the price of high-rise apartments skyrocketed during a real estate investment frenzy in the early 2000s, landowners and speculators became wealthy practically overnight. The district's rich families got even richer.

The new wealth drew the trendiest boutiques and clubs and a proliferation of plastic surgery clinics, but it also provided access to something considered vital in modern South Korea: top-notch education in the form of prestigious private tutoring and prep schools.?Gangnam?households spend nearly four times more on education than the national average.

The notion that?Gangnam?residents have risen not by following the traditional South Korean virtues of hard work and sacrifice, but simply by living on a coveted piece of geography, irks many. The neighborhood's residents are seen by some as monopolizing the country's best education opportunities, the best cultural offerings and the best infrastructure, while spending big on foreign luxury goods to highlight their wealth.

"Gangnam?inspires both envy and distaste," said Kim Zakka, a Seoul-based pop music critic. "Gangnam?residents are South Korea's upper class, but South Koreans consider them self-interested, with no sense of noblesse oblige."

In a sly, entertaining way, PSY's song pushes these cultural buttons.

THE GUY:

More mainstream K-Pop performers, already famous in South Korea and across Asia, have tried and failed to crack the American market.

So how did PSY ? aka Park Jae-sang ? a stocky, 34-year-old rapper who was fined nearly $4,500 for smoking marijuana after his 2001 debut, get to be the one teaching Britney Spears how to do the horse-riding dance on American TV?

"I'm not handsome, I'm not tall, I'm not muscular, I'm not skinny," PSY recently said on the American "Today" TV show. "But I'm sitting here."

12 Colleges Whose Payoff In Pay Beats Harvard's

Graduate from Harvard, and Aunt Bessie will be impressed. Graduate from Loma Linda University, and you'll get a better-paying job. According to PayScale, which tracks college graduates' starting median salaries, the latest crop of Harvard grads will earn $54,100; those from Loma Linda, $64,600.

Harvard's tuition and fees are $40,866; Loma Linda's $29,096.

Asked by ABC News to look for colleges whose new graduates earn more than Harvard's, PayScale came up with a surprising list of 12 schools. Forget Princeton. Forget Yale. Tell your son or daughter to throw away the leather elbow-patches and to forget the ivy. What they want is a nice maritime academy or school of mines.

According to the list below, graduates of the Colorado School of Mines earn a starting median salary of $63,400. And they didn't have to dig themselves into a hole to get it: The cost of tuition and fees is only $17,718 for in-staters; $32,748 for out-of-staters. Sure, maybe they'll have to wield a pickaxe now and then, but, after work, they'll be the ones graciously picking up the tab for Harvard grads who forgot to wire home for money.

Graduates of the State of New York Maritime College in Throggs Neck, New York, may get awfully tired of having to explain what a Neck is; but they'll be compensated by a salty starting salary of $57,300. Even more so than the School of Mines, the Maritime College is a steal for in-staters ($6,782), and only somewhat less so for out-of-staters ($16,032).

PayScale has been producing its ranking annually for the past eight years. Lead economist Katie Bardaro says colleges that rank the highest tend to be those that concentrate on engineering, nursing and health sciences.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), for instance, stands out she says because it concentrates on computer engineering. In today's world, that's a good thing on which to concentrate: "There's lots of opportunity, and new graduates are paid very well. It's not as tough a market as some others"?e.g., 18th Century organ music.

Bardaro allows as how some of the schools listed here charge stiff tuitions. Rensselaer Polytechnic in Troy, New York, charges $3,600 more than Harvard. But the cost, thinks Bardaro, is more than justified by graduates' higher salaries.

The list below gives each school's name and location, followed by its graduates' median starting and how much they paid for tuition and fees. The cost figures come from U.S. News' annual college ranking.

1. Loma Linda University Loma Linda, CA $64,600 ($29,096)

2. Harvey Mudd College Claremont, CA $64,400 ($44,442)

3. Molloy College Rockville Center, NY $64,000 ($24,420)

4. Colorado School of Mines Golden, CO $63,400 ($17,718 in-state/ $32,748 out-)

5. Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Worcester, MA $61,200 ($41,380)

6. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) Terre Haute, IN $60,700 ($39,078)

7. Thomas Jefferson University Philadelphia, PA $59,800 ($32,159)

8. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Troy, NY $59,500 ($44,475)

9. Felician College Lodi, NY $58,700 ($29,400)

10. Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) Rolla, MO $58,600 ($9,350 in-state/ $32,666 out-)

11. Clarkson University Potsdam, NY $57,900 ($38,610)

12. State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College Throggs Neck, NY $57,300 ($6,782 in-state/ $16,032 out)

Pesticides not yet proven guilty of causing honeybee declines, experts say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? The impact of crop pesticides on honeybee colonies is unlikely to cause colony collapse, according to a paper in the journal Science September 20, 2012. More research is now needed to predict the impact of widely-used agricultural insecticides, called neonicotinoids, on honeybee populations.

UK scientists from the University of Exeter and Food and Environment Agency highlight flaws in previous research (published in Science, April 2012) that predicted that neonicotinoids could cause honeybee colony collapse. Neonicotinoids are among the most widely-used agricultural insecticides and honeybees ingest residues of the pesticides as they gather nectar and pollen from treated plants.

The previous research has been cited by scientists, environmentalists and policy-makers as evidence of the future impact of these pesticides on honeybees. It is likely that the research was instrumental in the French government's recent decision to ban the use of thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid that is the active ingredient of Cruiser OSR, a pesticide produced by the Swiss company Syngenta.

However, the new paper argues that the calculations made in the research were flawed because they failed to reflect the rate at which honeybee colonies recover from losing individuals.

The previous research, led by French scientist Mika?l Henry, showed that the death rate of bees increased when they drank nectar laced with a neonicotinoid pesticide, thiamethoxam. It calculated that this would cause their colony to collapse. The research published September 20 explains how the calculation may have used an inappropriately low birth rate.

Lead author Dr James Cresswell of the University of Exeter said: "We know that neonicotinoids affect honeybees, but there is no evidence that they could cause colony collapse. When we repeated the previous calculation with a realistic birth rate, the risk of colony collapse under pesticide exposure disappeared.

"I am definitely not saying that pesticides are harmless to honeybees, but I think everyone wants to make decisions based on sound evidence -- and our research shows that the effects of thiamethoxam are not as severe as first thought.

"We do not yet have definitive evidence of the impact of these insecticides on honeybees and we should not be making any decisions on changes to policy on their use. It is vital that more research is conducted so that we can understand the real impact of neonicotinoids on honeybees, so governments can put together a proper plan to protect them from any dangers that the chemicals pose."
