Let's face it, we're already blessed and we haven't even seen what the NBA has gotten us for Christmas yet.

Kyrie Irving and Ricky Rubio returned

The 2012-13 NBA season began with the top two vote-recievers in last season's NBA Rookie of the Year results sitting on the sidelines. Rookie of the Year runner-up Ricky Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves was recovering from knee surgery, as the borderline playoff contenders were trying to stay afloat without him and forward Kevin Love. The situation in Cleveland was even more dire as the Cavaliers stumbled to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings without unanimous Rookie of the Year winner Kyrie Irving.

Luckily for Irving, he was allowed to ease back into Cleveland's lineup by making his season debut against some struggling sub-.500 team from California. The player saved his best game for Saturday, when a masked Irving, perhaps advertising the upcoming "Lone Ranger" movie, scored a career high 41 points against the New York Knicks. The Knicks won 103-102, but Irving's superhero role-playing and the close game against one of the best teams in the East suggests that the rest of the Cavs' season will be a lot more enjoyable than the beginning.

Rubio's return to the Minnesota Timberwolves was also successful as Rubio made 9 assists, scored 8 points and made 3 steals in 18 minutes off the bench in what ended up being a win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night. Now that we've firmly established that, let's discuss who will be the 2012-13 season's Rookie of the Year.

Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Hornets was supposed to be the runaway favorite for the honor, but as the Hornets have struggled early a new contender has emerged: Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers. On Thursday night, Lillard led the Trail Blazers over the San Antonio Spurs on national television, scoring 29 points in the process. Sunday night, Lillard added a game-winner to his week's accomplishments, hitting a three-pointer to defeat, who else, the New Orleans Hornets 95-94.

Davis, of course, has the leg up on Lillard in the recognition department, having won the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament with the University of Kentucky, been the number one draft pick and played on the Men's Olympic Basketball team in the London Olympics. In the offseason, the Atlanta Hawks were applauded for trading away their best player. After getting out of the Dwight Howard sweepstakes, the Nets were looking for a big splash as they transitioned from New Jersey to Brooklyn. The Nets were willing to make the financial commitment in exchange for having a premiere player to act as a number two option alongside Deron Williams. Joe Johnson's biggest moment so far for the franchise happened during Friday night's 107-105 win over the Detroit Pistons, when he hit a buzzer-beating game winning jumper (complete with a "Seinfeld" reference from the announcers) that finally allowed an exhausted Nets to leave the floor after two overtimes. It wasn't the prettiest of victories, the Nets had lost a 17 point lead, but it was one of those wins that can help a team discover its identity. The Nets, who are dealing with a struggling Williams while adjusting to the return of center Brook Lopez (sorry everybody who had Andrew Bynum playing before Lopez in the 2012-13 season) could use a few more big moments from their big-money second banana.

Not everyone enjoys the NBA on Christmas

Yes we all know about Santa Claus, gift giving and tacky decorations, but it's time to talk about the true meaning of Christmas: Jesus. Jesus Shuttlesworth. Yes, the NBA is again gifting us a full day's worth of basketball action, and, yes, Ray Allen will most likely again be on the floor (the Miami Heat will be playing the Oklahoma City Thunder, a matchup that sounds vaguely familiar). Although this year's December 25th won't be as merry as last year's, when Christmas doubled as Opening Day for the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season, the NBA still has a great slate of games scheduled.

Now, not everyone is a fan of the NBA playing games on Christmas, whether out of genuine concern for NBA players and stadium workers or just because it's fun to rag on things that most people enjoy. Sometimes, however, this criticism borders on character assassination. As Deadspin pointed out on Sunday, the most troubling criticism came from the San Francisco Chronicle's Bruce Jenkins who had this to say about NBA's Christmas Day games:

One of the most distasteful aspects of commissioner David Stern's legacy - ruining Christmas for far too many people - comes into play again this year with five televised games scheduled. "It used to be two teams," retired coach Phil Jackson said. "But I don't think anybody should play on Christmas Day. Your little kids are putting batteries in their new toys, all kinds of family stuff going on, and now you're supposed to get focused on a game in the middle of the afternoon?"

Jackson is among many observers who point out the obvious: that Stern, who celebrates Hanukkah, has no real feel for Christmas in the first place.

So there you go, David Stern is ruining Christmas because he's Jewish. Jenkins apologized on Monday for a column that sounded too close to antisemitism for many: "That statement is just plain wrong, not to mention arrogant, and I apologize for it. I should not have brought up the subject of Stern's religion."

What exactly is the problem with NBA games on Christmas? As far as holiday sports traditions, this writer thinks it's second only to NFL on Thanksgiving (and, as a bonus, the Detroit Lions are never involved). In a day where nearly everything in town shuts down and there's a dearth of viable entertainment options, the NBA is there for hardcore sports fans, those detoxing from nonstop holiday specials or simply casual fans looking for an excuse to escape from their families for a few hours. Thanks in advance to everyone who spends their Christmas Day making sure these games are played.

Here?s a preview of some of the new features in Excel 2013 from CFO. A couple of the features that interest me:

? Combo Charts get a new interface. You want to show Revenue and GP% on the same chart. There used to be a confusing method for assigning GP% as a line chart on the secondary axis. The new Combo Chart interface (below) makes it incredibly straightforward. For each series, you control the chart type and where it?s plotted.

? Relationships instead of VLOOKUP. If you add your worksheets to the pedestrian ?Data Model? feature, you can use the Relationships icon to define that CustID in your million row transaction worksheet is related to CustNumber in your customer worksheet. Now, without doing millions of VLOOKUPs, you can create pivot tables from the data on both worksheets. Whether you?re sick of people who feel superior because they can do VLOOKUP, or someone who does VLOOKUP in their sleep, no one can argue that creating a relationship in 3 clicks is faster than waiting for a million VLOOKUPs to recalculate.

This sounds like a feature I will really like (once I learn how to use it).

? =FORMULATEXT(A2). This new function will put the formula from cell A2 in a cell. Whether you?re trying to document the formulas you used, or you?re looking for plug numbers in a column, this tiny little function is a winner. There are 50 new calculation functions in Excel, none will ever get mentioned in the Microsoft marketing materials, but FORMULATEXT is the one that I can?t see living without. I still use Excel 2010 and Excel 2013 interchangeably, but the first thing that makes me aware that I am not in 2013 is when my =FORMULATEXT() functions don?t work.

Aerobic exercise trumps resistance training for weight and fat loss

Aerobic training is the best mode of exercise for burning fat, according to Duke researchers who compared aerobic training, resistance training, and a combination of the two.

The study, which appears Dec. 15, 2012, in the Journal of Applied Physiology, is the largest randomized trial to analyze changes in body composition from the three modes of exercise in overweight or obese adults without diabetes.

Aerobic exercise ? including walking, running, and swimming ? has been proven to be an effective way to lose weight. However, recent guidelines have suggested that resistance training, which includes weight lifting to build and maintain muscle mass, may also help with weight loss by increasing a person's resting metabolic rate. Research has demonstrated health benefits for resistance training, such as improving glucose control, but studies on the effects of resistance training on fat mass have been inconclusive.

"Given that approximately two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight due to excess body fat, we want to offer clear, evidence-based exercise recommendations that will truly help people lose weight and body fat," said Leslie H. Willis, MS, an exercise physiologist at Duke Medicine and the study's lead author.

Researchers enrolled 234 overweight or obese adults in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three exercise training groups: resistance training (three days per week of weight lifting, three sets per day, 8-12 repetitions per set), aerobic training (approximately 12 miles per week), or aerobic plus resistance training (three days a week, three set per day, 8-12 repetitions per set for resistance training, plus approximately 12 miles per week of aerobic exercise).

The exercise sessions were supervised in order to accurately measure adherence among participants. Data from 119 people who completed the study and had complete body composition data were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of each exercise regimen.

The groups assigned to aerobic training and aerobic plus resistance training lost more weight than those who did just resistance training. The resistance training group actually gained weight due to an increase in lean body mass.

Aerobic exercise was also a more efficient method of exercise for losing body fat. The aerobic exercise group spent an average of 133 minutes a week training and lost weight, while the resistance training group spent approximately 180 minutes exercising a week without shedding pounds.

The combination exercise group, while requiring double the time commitment, provided a mixed result. The regimen helped participants lose weight and fat mass, but did not significantly reduce body mass nor fat mass over aerobic training alone. This group did notice the largest decrease in waist circumference, which may be attributed to the amount of time participants spent exercising.

Resting metabolic rate, which determines how many calories are burned while at rest, was not directly measured in this study. While theories suggest that resistance training can improve resting metabolic rates and therefore aid in weight loss, in this study, resistance training did not significantly decrease fat mass nor body weight irrespective of any change in resting metabolic rate that might have occurred.

"No one type of exercise will be best for every health benefit," Willis added. "However, it might be time to reconsider the conventional wisdom that resistance training alone can induce changes in body mass or fat mass due to an increase in metabolism, as our study found no change."

Duke researchers added that exercise recommendations are age-specific. For older adults experiencing muscle atrophy, studies have found resistance training to be beneficial. However, younger, healthy adults or those looking to lose weight would see better results doing aerobic training.

"Balancing time commitments against health benefits, our study suggests that aerobic exercise is the best option for reducing fat mass and body mass," said Cris A. Slentz, PhD, a Duke exercise physiologist and study co-author. "It's not that resistance training isn't good for you; it's just not very good at burning fat."

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Architect Oscar Niemeyer, who recreated Brazil's sensuous curves in reinforced concrete and built the capital of Brasilia on the empty central plains as a symbol of the nation's future, died on Wednesday. He was 104.

A spokeswoman for the Hospital Samaritano in Rio de Janeiro confirmed Niemeyer's passing but did not give a cause of death. She spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the press.

Niemeyer was hospitalized for two weeks in May 2012 for pneumonia and dehydration. He spent another two weeks at the same hospital in October for dehydration.

In works from Brasilia's crown-shaped cathedral to the undulating French Communist Party building in Paris, Niemeyer shunned the steel-box structures of many modernist architects, finding inspiration in nature's crescents and spirals. His hallmarks include much of the United Nations complex in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in Niteroi, which is perched like a flying saucer across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro.

"Right angles don't attract me. Nor straight, hard and inflexible lines created by man," he wrote in his 1998 memoir "The Curves of Time." ''What attracts me are free and sensual curves. The curves we find in mountains, in the waves of the sea, in the body of the woman we love."

His curves give sweep and grace to Brasilia, the city that opened up Brazil's vast interior in the 1960s and moved the nation's capital from coastal Rio.

Niemeyer designed most of the city's important buildings, while French-born, avant-garde architect Lucio Costa crafted its distinctive airplane-like layout. Niemeyer left his mark in the flowing concrete of the Cabinet ministries and the monumental dome of the national museum.

As the city grew to 2 million, critics said it lacked "soul" as well as street corners, "a utopian horror," in the words of art critic Robert Hughes.

Niemeyer shrugged off the criticism.

"If you go to Brasilia you might not like it, say there's something better, but there's nothing just like it," he said in an interview with O Globo newspaper in 2006 at age 98. "I search for surprise in my architecture. A work of art should cause the emotion of newness."

Even late in life, Niemeyer was striving for renewal. In 2009, he came under heavy criticism for proposing to build a "Plaza of Sovereignty" in the heart of Brasilia.

Preservationists said the 330-foot-tall (100-meter) obelisk he envisioned would mar the very skyline the architect created a half-century earlier. Niemeyer relented on the plaza, only to unveil new plans for a 165-foot-tall (50-meter) tower in the same spot.

Living well past the century mark, Niemeyer's journey mirrored that of his beloved Brazil, and his restless modernism captured the developing country's sweeping ambitions.

With hundreds of his buildings dotting the landscape, arguably no other architect shared as tight a bond with a country as Niemeyer did with Brazil.

Oscar Niemeyer Soares Filho was born on Dec. 15, 1907, in Rio de Janeiro, and earned his architecture degree at Rio's School of Fine Arts.

Working in Costa's office in 1936, he helped design a Rio education ministry building that was a classic of functionalist horizontal and vertical lines. With modernist giant Le Corbusier, Niemeyer developed the "brise soleil," a heat protector that enhanced the building's grid design and became an architectural standard in the 1960s.

Niemeyer teamed up again with Le Corbusier in 1947 to design much of the United Nations complex in New York. After months of squabbling with architects ? most notably Le Corbusier ? Niemeyer came up with the final plan for the complex, including the Secretariat, General Assembly and conference buildings and the Dag Hammarskjold Library.

But Niemeyer already was chafing at the limits of form-follows-function architecture.

His first solo project was the Pampulha complex of buildings set on an artificial lake in the central Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, now Brazil's third-largest metro area. For the first time, Niemeyer employed the curves and arches that would become his hallmark.

Not everyone was pleased. The St. Francis church, built in a series of parabolic arches resembling waves, was shunned for years by Catholics who considered it an offense to Christianity. Finished in 1944, the church wasn't inaugurated as a place of worship until the late 1950s.

"If you examine Pampulha, you will feel the freedom of the forms used there," Niemeyer said. "In the lightness of the exposed structure, you will sense that something new sprang up in Brazilian architecture."

In the 1950s, Niemeyer was summoned by President Juscelino Kubitschek to design a new capital on Brazil's empty central high plains. Costa became the project's urban planner.

With the slogan of "50 years in five," Kubitschek hoped to prod Brazil into a great leap forward ? and inward, away from the coast.

Niemeyer rose to the challenge, testing new forms and technical limits for reinforced concrete. His cone-shaped Metropolitan Cathedral is a circle of curved concrete pillars set like tepee poles with glass mosaic in between.

"I didn't want an old-style cathedral ? dark, a reminder of sin," he said in an interview in the 1990s. "I wanted something happier."

Perhaps his best-known creation was the National Congress building, designed as two giant white bowls, one facing up and another facing down, with twin 330-foot-tall (100-meter) towers rising between them.

In 1987, UNESCO declared Brasilia a World Heritage Landmark.

"If you pick up the pencil thinking only of the solution, you will draw without an idea. What's important in architecture is intuition," he said. "I have my system of work ... based on fantasy, but always feeling logical."

After a 1964 coup plunged Brazil into a 21-year military dictatorship, Niemeyer, a lifelong communist, decided to spend more time in Europe than Brazil. While living in France in 1965, he designed the headquarters of the French Communist Party. During the dictatorship he also designed the center of the Mondadori publishing house in Italy, Constantine University in Algeria and other projects in Israel, Lebanon, Germany and Portugal.

He won the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architecture in 1970, the Pritzker Architecture Prize from Chicago's Hyatt Foundation in 1988 and the Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1998.

After 1974, Niemeyer turned his attention again to Brazil. In 1984, Rio inaugurated the 60,000-seat Sambadrome he designed for Rio's annual Carnival parade, and hundreds of graceful concrete public schools based on his prefabricated model.

Although he never liked flying and gradually stopped traveling by air, Niemeyer never ceased working. He also never abandoned his faith in communism, befriending Cuban leader Fidel Castro. His Brasilia monument to Kubitschek, a statue in an elevated curve of stone, was criticized by the military regime for its similarity to the communist hammer-and-sickle.

In a 2006 article for the Brazilian daily Folha de S. Paulo, Niemeyer wrote: "Life is more important than architecture. ... One day the world will be more just and will take life to a superior stage, no longer limited to governments and dominant classes."

Hunched over and walking slowly, he went to his office daily, designing and following his projects by videoconference.

Until the end, he embraced architecture as a humanist endeavor and rejected criticism that his buildings were more enjoyable to look at than to live or work in.

"The architect ... must feel that human beings also are important," he said. "Because nothing (else) is important. Life lasts but a minute."

Cancer Hospital Chain Pitches In To Help a Philadelphia Food Bank ...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? The Philadelphia area hunger relief organization Philabundance is getting a two-fer: volunteers and a donation from a chain of cancer hospitals.

At the Philabundance warehouse today in South Philadelphia, spokeswoman Lindsey Bues said food insecurity in the Philadelphia area is a pressing issue.

?Philabundance recently surveyed its member organizations, and we?re seeing a 29-percent increase in need compared to last year,? she said.

This week, health care management trainees from Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Philadelphia, Chicago, Phoenix, Tulsa, and Atlanta were volunteering at Philabundance, for a combined 150-plus hours of service.

Tiffany Payette of Phoenix says she enjoyed giving back.

?Philabundance is an amazing organization ? what a well tuned machine!? she said.

Eric Evans works nearby at the CTCA hospital in Philadelphia.

?I?m learning things about Philabundance that I didn?t know, like the amount of people they help in the area,? he tells KYW Newsradio.

CTCA also wrote a $15,000 check to help the nonprofit food bank.? Philabundance says it is able to provide two meals for each dollar donated.

They don?t celebrate Thanksgiving Day here, of course, but Nov. 11, has become the biggest shopping day on the Chinese calendar.

That?s because it is known as ?Singles Day? (11.11 ? geddit?) ? a type of Valentine?s Day for those without lovers, but with friends to whom they give gifts.

Online stores have cashed in on the idea, offering mouthwatering discounts on everything from cars to clothes to tempt consumers online on Singles Day, turning it into a retail bonanza? and it works.?

?I hadn?t planned to buy anything but I heard there would be great discounts so I went online to have a look,? says Liu Na, a 20-something book editor. ?I bought a blouse and a bag for myself, at 50 percent off.?

This year, e-commerce sales on Nov. 11 reached $4.6 billion, according to an estimate by the Economic Herald, a specialist daily in Shandong province.

That may not look like much compared with ?Black Friday? spending in the US (which topped $11.4 billion last year), until you take a couple of things into account:?

First, average Chinese salaries are 10 times smaller than average American salaries.

Second, this is just online. A comparable day in America might be ?Cyber Monday,? coming up after the weekend. Last year online US shoppers shelled out $1.25 billion ? little more than a quarter of what their Chinese counterparts spent two weeks ago.

The Chinese government may not be keen on the political corners of the Internet, but it loves the commercial aspect; its current five year plan for the economy foresees a fourfold jump in e-commerce?from 2010 levels to $2.9 trillion by 2015.

China has the world?s largest online population, at 538 million, and has more online shoppers than anywhere else too: On Nov. 11, some 213 million people ? nearly half of all Chinese Internet users ? visited one of Alibaba?s two retail platforms. Alibaba, which runs the two biggest e-commerce sites in China, reported sales of $2.94 billion on Nov.11.

Ten million consumers ? more than the population of Greece ? clicked on an Alibaba site in the first minute of Nov. 11, in the dead of night.

The massive Singles Day sales promotions are expected to boost the number of online shoppers even further. Ms. Liu for example, says she has normally shopped in bricks-and-mortar stores, but her Singles Day experience has converted her.

??Apart from the discounts, it?s a lot more convenient,? she says.

Holiday fitness gifts trend from high-tech to basic

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Looking for the perfect holiday present for a fitness fan? Gift offerings this year range from apps that can store a run in the country to be viewed later to gadgets so sophisticated they measure quality of sleep as well as calories burned.

There is also the revival of the humble foam roller, which experts say, like old-time push-ups, squats and planks, has never been more popular.

Anita Golden, fitness manager at a Crunch gym in New York City, said she'll be giving clients a foam roller called the GRID.

"We've always had foam rollers in the club but now more people are using them as a way to ease post-workout muscles, prevent injuries and exercise the core," Golden said.

When it comes to big-ticket items, Colleen Logan of Icon Health and Fitness, which manufactures a number of fitness brands, said the treadmill remains the most popular gift.

"Treadmills continue to lead the industry in terms of home fitness purchases," said Logan.

They account for about 57 percent of fitness purchases, while elliptical trainers and stationary bicycles are a distant second and third place at about 8 percent each.

The average home treadmill costs about $700, said Logan, but the technology revolution has transformed even this stalwart at the high end.

The ultimate splurge, at $4,000, she said, is the Boston Marathon Treadmill, which allows users to adjust speed in 1/10 of a mile per hour increments without touching the console. It also lets users run a virtual Boston Marathon.

For people on a smaller budget, there is the iFit app that lets the iPhone capture a favourite vacation run or bike ride in Hawaii, store it in data centres all over the world which collectively are referred to as the "cloud," and download it to an iFit-enabled treadmill at home.

"You'll view the exact route and experience the same terrain again," Logan explained.

Devices, gadgets and apps proliferate as tech-savvy fitness becomes more accessible, according to Jessica Matthews of the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

"There's a lot of interest in on-body monitoring devices as ways to motivate and track progress," she said. "They run the gamut from basic devices to track hours, steps, and caloric expenditure to full-body tracking."

Nike+ Sportsband has a series of small lights on the wrist band that change from red to green as the runner nears his goal, while the BodyMedia FIT Armband tracks everything from the number of calories burned to the quality and quantity of sleep.

ACE also studied fitness DVDs released for the holidays.

"We evaluated them for quality of instruction, safety, effectiveness and design of workout," Matthews said.

Among the best were "Amy Dixon's Breathless Body Vol.2: The Edge." Matthews called it a challenging cardio workout best suited to those on your list with "an established base of fitness."

"Jessica Smith's 10 Pounds Down Better Body Blast" also got a thumbs up for its well-rounded routine and clarity of instruction.

For people seeking a mind-body approach, Matthews praised "STOTT Pilates Intense Body Blast: Pilates Interval Training: Level I," which she said is accessible for someone new to fitness.

"They do a great job queuing movements and creating flow," she said.

Richard Cotton of the American College of Sports Medicine suggests giving the fitness novice the gift of a personal trainer.

"The best is human assistance," he said. "Another way is a beginner group exercise class."

He also suggests a gift certificate for shoes at a running store equipped with a treadmill.

"You need shoes that fit your gait," he said. "People should always get their gait analyzed."

Golden likes to cite the law of reciprocity to the personal trainers she manages.

"I always tell them to get their clients something," she said.

And what does the personal trainer want for Christmas?

"I like the roller, or a new jump rope," she said. "Fitness people aren't hard to please. Get me a new yoga mat and I'm happy."

Marvell brings a gig to WiFi with new 802.11ac 4x4 system-on-chip

If you need data to flow more copiously than your current wireless connection will permit, Marvell has just announced a new WiFi product that might let you finally cut the cord. The Avastar 88W8864 802.11ac "4x4" SoC will permit WLAN products to stream data at up to 1.3Gbps using four antennas, over three times faster than the 802.11n standard used now. The system also sports a specialized transmission method called "beamforming," that "greatly improves link robustness and wireless performance," according to Marvell, enabling seamless HD streaming in traditionally difficult spots, for instance. The new tech will also let you stretch out your wireless range by at least six times, while increasing the battery life of any connected device, to boot. The company expects the new technology to start arriving to products like set-top boxes, access points and "carrier-grade" HD by mid next year -- so you may want to put that messy wire-routing project on permanent hold.

Tajikistan blocks US-funded news website

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (AP) ? Tajikistan has blocked a popular U.S.-funded news website, only days after barring access to social networking site Facebook for featuring content allegedly insulting to the Central Asian nation's president.

State communications service chief, Beg Zukhurov, said Friday that the block on Ozodi, the Tajik-language service of Radio Free Europe, wase in response to public complaints that the site featured content detrimental to the national interest.

Tajikistan has low levels of Internet penetration, but the former Soviet republic's authorities have nonetheless proven nervous over critical reporting and any signs government opponents could use online media to mobilize.

Radio Free Europe is funded by the U.S. Congress and has local news services in several former Soviet nations.

Zukhurov drew withering online mockery this week after demanding in an interview to know who the owner of Facebook was and asking that he travel to Tajikistan to meet with him in person.

Radio Free Europe's English-language site subsequently published a photo of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg holding up a sign in Tajik reading: "I own this network."

Zukhurov has claimed that groups of volunteers trawl the Internet for inaccuracies and material defamatory to government officials and businessmen. He has also said Internet users are being paid up to $10,000 to post online remarks criticizing state officials.

Zukhurov maintains that at least a million people in Tajikistan ? one seventh of the population ? support barring certain websites, including Facebook.

It was unclear how Zukhurov was sourcing these claims, which critics in Tajikistan have derided.

Other websites to be targeted by online blocks in the past include the BBC, Russian state-owned news station Vesti, and YouTube.

Access to the country's most popular news website, Asia-Plus, was barred in July in an apparent attempt to limit information about fighting between government troops and armed groups in a remote area on the border with Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Secret Service said Thursday a man interfered with a motorcade carrying Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney as his vehicle arrived at a secure checkpoint near the White House. The man was later arrested after he became combative during an interview with a police officer.

Secret Service spokesman Max Milien said the man, who was not identified, was standing near a security entrance to the White House and got in the motorcade's way. The vehicle stopped briefly at the security gate and then entered the White House complex.

Milien says the man was later interviewed by a uniform division officer and became combative. He was charged with assault on a police officer and unlawful entry.

Romney came to the White House for lunch with Obama, their first meeting since the election.

A CNN video of the incident shows a man briefly heckling Romney near the passenger side of the SUV before the vehicle proceeded through the gates and onto the grounds of the White House.

Record-setting X-ray jet: X-rays from supermassive black hole 12.4 billion light years from Earth

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A jet of X-rays from a supermassive black hole 12.4 billion light years from Earth has been detected by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. This is the most distant X-ray jet ever observed and gives astronomers a glimpse into the explosive activity associated with the growth of supermassive black holes in the early universe.

The jet was produced by a quasar named GB 1428+4217, or GB 1428 for short. Giant black holes at the centers of galaxies can pull in matter at a rapid rate producing the quasar phenomenon. The energy released as particles fall toward the black hole generates intense radiation and powerful beams of high-energy particles that blast away from the black hole at nearly the speed of light. These particle beams can interact with magnetic fields or ambient photons to produce jets of radiation.

"We're excited about this result not just because it's a record holder, but because very few X-ray jets are known in the early universe," said Teddy Cheung of the National Academy of Sciences, resident at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC, and lead author of the paper describing these results.

As the electrons in the jet fly away from the quasar, they move through a sea of background photons left behind after the Big Bang. When a fast-moving electron collides with one of these so-called cosmic microwave background photons, it can boost the photon's energy into the X-ray band.

"Since the brightness of the jet in X-rays depends, among other things, on how fast the electrons are moving away from the black hole, discoveries like the jet in GB 1428 tell us something about the environment around supermassive black holes and their host galaxies not that long after the Big Bang," said co-author Lukasz Stawarz from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in Kanagawa, Japan.

Because the quasar is seen when the universe is at an age of about 1.3 billion years, less than 10% of its current value, the cosmic background radiation is a thousand times more intense than it is now. This makes the jet much brighter, and compensates in part for the dimming due to distance.

"We're lucky that the universe gives us this natural amplifier and lets us detect this object with relatively short exposures," said co-author Aneta Siemiginowska, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, MA, "Otherwise we might miss important physical processes happening at very large distances from Earth and as far away as GB 1428."

While there is another possible source of X-rays for the jet -- radiation from electrons spiraling around magnetic field lines in the jet -- the authors favor the idea that the cosmic background radiation is being boosted because the jet is so bright.

Prior to the discovery of the jet in GB 1428, the most distant X-ray jet known was 12.2 billion light years away, and another is located at about 12 billion light years, both discovered by authors of the GB 1428 paper. A very similar shaped jet in GB 1428 was also detected in radio waves with the NSF's Very Large Array (VLA).

The particle beams that produce these three extremely distant X-ray jets appear to be moving slightly more slowly than jets from galaxies that are not as far away. This may be because the jets were less energetic when launched from the black hole or because they are slowed down more by their environment.

The researchers think the length of the jet in GB 1428 is at least 230,000 light years, or about twice the diameter of the entire Milky Way galaxy. This jet is only seen on one side of the quasar in the Chandra and VLA data. When combined with previously obtained evidence, this suggests the jet is pointed almost directly toward us. This configuration would boost the X-ray and radio signals for the observed jet and diminish those for a jet presumably pointed in the opposite direction.

Observations were also taken of GB 1428 with a set of radio telescopes at different locations around Earth that allows details to be resolved on exceptionally small scales. They revealed the presence of a much smaller jet, about 1,900 light years long, which points in a similar direction to the X-ray jet.

This result appeared in the September 1st, 2012 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Other co-authors of the paper are Doug Gobeille from University of South Florida in Tampa, FL; John Wardle from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA; and Dan Harris and Dan Schwartz from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Former "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler is sorry that Nicki Minaj found comments he made about her to be racist. "I apologize if it was taken wrong, Nicki," the Aerosmith rocker said Tuesday on eTalk, a Canadian entertainment show.

"But I am the farthest from (being a racist)," he said. "I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist. I don't know where she got that out of me saying I'm not sure how she would've judged Bob Dylan."

Minaj was outraged after Tyler told MTV he thought the "Starships" singer "would have sent (Dylan) to the cornfield" if he'd come on "Idol." But Tyler insisted he only meant, "if Bob Dylan came on the show, he would've been thrown off."

"Maybe I spoke out of turn," he said. "But a racist I'm not, Nicki."

Sunlight instantly turns ice water to steam using nanoparticles

Sunlight and itsy bitsy flecks of metal or carbon are all that?s required to quickly vaporize icy-cold water, according to researchers who recently unveiled a new steam-generating process that could revolutionize industrial practices without the hangover of greenhouse gas emissions.

Steam is used throughout our world. It spins turbines to generate electricity and heats kettles used to brew beer. It is used to sterilize medical equipment and distill alcohol.?

But, generating steam typically requires tons of energy to heat and boil water. The most common sources of energy are coal, oil, and natural gas ? fossil fuels that when burned emit carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas that?s building up in the atmosphere and causing the planet?s climate to change.

Researchers at Rice University unveiled a method that uses light-absorbing nanoparticles submerged in water to convert solar energy directly into piping?hot?steam. It is so effective that it can even produce the?steam from ice water.

The tiny particles heat up so quickly that they instantly vaporize water, rather than dissipating the?heat into the surrounding fluid. Precisely how this works is a bit of a mystery, according to Naomi Halas, ?director of the nanophotonics laboratory at Rice University.

?There seems to be some nanoscale thermal barrier, because it is clearly making steam like crazy,? she told Technology Review.

The process has an overall efficiency of 24 percent, compared to about 15 percent efficiency for solar panels such as those on your neighbor?s roof. But generating electricity is unlikely the first application of the new technology, which was developed with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.?

Rather, it will be used for sanitation and water purification in developing countries, helping to stem the spread of disease. To that end, the Rice University team has already created a solar steam-powered autoclave to sterilize medical and dental instruments at clinics without access to electricity.

The technology could, however, also improve the efficiency and lower the cost of large-scale solar thermal energy generating plants, which use sunlight to warm up oil that is then used to heat water and generate steam to spin turbines.?

Generating steam directly with the nanoparticles would be 3 to 5 percent more efficient and result in a cost savings of about 10 percent due to the less complex design, Todd Otanicar, a mechanical engineer at the University of Tulsa, told Technology Review.?
