Mexican navy captures regional boss of Zetas drug cartel

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico arrested one of the top traffickers of the Zetas drug cartel accused of overseeing the feared gangs' operations across the south of the country, the navy said on Friday.

Naval forces captured on Thursday Mauricio Guizar, known as "El Amarillo," in a hotel in small town in the central state of Puebla where he was holed up with 20 grenades, an anti-tank bazooka and a submachine gun, the navy said in a statement.

Guizar is implicated in the killing of four soldiers in the Gulf state of Veracruz in April.

He is accused of being a lieutenant of one of the Zetas' top commanders, Oscar Omar Trevino, and running operations in five southern states for the cartel, which traffics cocaine and other narcotics to the United States.

The Zetas were founded by army deserters and authorities say they are responsible for some of the bloodiest massacres in Mexico's drug war.

More than 55,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence since outgoing President Felipe Calderon launched an army-led offensive against the cartels shortly after taking office in late 2006.

A new president, Enrique Pena Nieto, from the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) was elected on July 1 promising a change in security strategy as many voters tired of the spiraling violence.

Calderon claims high-level captures of drug capos as a success in the drug war, with security forces succeeding in detaining or killing around two dozen of Mexico's 37 most wanted kingpins over the past six years. But analysts say attacking top cartel leaders has led to internal splits in the criminal organizations and caused more violence.

Trevino and his brother Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, one of the alleged leaders of the Zetas, are both at large and were charged this year in the United States with laundering drug proceeds by buying, breeding and racing American racehorses.

Guizar's arrest follows the detention of other alleged Zetas this week in Puebla, including William de Jesus Torres, known as "The Worm Eater," who gave authorities information about the cartel's structure.

Danes set sights on claim to North Pole

Denmark will dispatch a scientific expedition to the Arctic Ocean at the end of the month to gather data before it submits a formal claim to a vast tract north of Greenland that includes the North Pole.

Such a claim would be made under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), setting up a possible clash of interests with fellow Arctic coastal states Russia and Canada that are making their own claims.

"We need the data that we plan to acquire on this cruise," said Christian Marcussen, the expedition's chief scientist from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. "But ... we are quite confident that we will be able to make a submission."

Denmark admits it is interested in staking a claim to a part of the planet believed to be rich in untapped oil and gas, but rules out a unilateral "land grab" or being drawn into confrontation over competing claims.

"I reject the confrontation scenarios that have been presented in the media and academic circles," Klaus Holm, Denmark's Arctic ambassador, said.

"If there is any area where every party has an interest in cooperating, it is the Arctic. The challenge is so huge and the areas are so vast."

The expedition will sail from Svalbard off northern Norway on July 31 aboard the Swedish icebreaker "Oden" and will gather seismic and depth data to substantiate a future possible claim, for which the deadline for Denmark is November 2014.

Danish flag at pole?
Denmark has identified five potential claim areas off the Faroe Islands and Greenland ? both parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Copenhagen has already submitted claims for areas north and south of the Faroes and for two areas south of Greenland to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) which assesses the scientific validity of such claims.

Any dispute would, however, need to be resolved through negotiations between states, and not by the CLCS.

The other area Denmark has identified ? likely to be the most sensitive part of any future claim ? is roughly 150,000 square kilometers (58,000 square miles) extending north from Greenland and including the North Pole.

For that claim to be credible, much depends on whether the expedition is able to gather data to prove that the Lomonosov Ridge, an underwater formation spanning 1,800 kilometers (1,118 miles) across the pole, is an extension of Greenland's land mass.

Russian scientists claim that the ridge is an extension of Russia's land mass, but that does not exclude that it could also be an extension of Greenland and Canada, Marcussen said.

Under the U.N. convention, a country can extend its 200-nautical-mile economic zone if it can prove that the continental shelf is a natural extension of its land mass.

Russia caused controversy in 2007 when a mini-submarine took the Russian flag to the seabed at the North Pole, sparking accusations of imperialism.

Marcussen said he didn't rule out stopping at the pole to plant a Danish flag on the ice, as his team did in 2009, if it happened to be on the icebreaker's route.

But he said that was not the goal of the 45-day expedition and that any flag would be removed after such a ceremony.

Covenant Relationships | FAITH & FAMILY FOUNDATION

Flickr/CC: xavivix

The concept of ?covenant? is important in our faith because of its role in our relationship with God. Examples of God?s covenant with his people abound in Scripture: God?s promise to Noah never again to destroy the earth comes to mind; God?s covenant with Abraham, to give him a son and many descendants, and to bless him, is another example.

Consequently, Christian families also thrive by having ?covenant relationships.? This begins with marriage. However, in the secular realm, marriage has been reduced into something less than a covenant. Marriage has become something like a loose contract. It has a solemn-sounding promise, but also easy stipulations for getting out of that contract. In several states, marriage can be broken simply based on ?irreconcilable differences.?

As Christians, our relationship with one another is based on ?covenant.? This means that there are principles involved much greater than a simple contract implies. And this applies especially in the case of marriage. A few states have even enacted (non religious) laws that allow a couple to enter into a ?covenant marriage.? For a Christian, this implies that a marriage is a solemn pact. Although there can be troubles along the way, but marriage is not an institution to be entered into easily, nor broken recklessly.

Scripture tells us that marriage is not just a bond between a man and a woman, but also a lifelong commitment to duty. Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians: ?Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her? (Eph 5:25). And to the wives, Paul said: ?Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.? (Eph 5:22). Marriage is a calling to mutual service and love, to live with respect and grace. God?s will is for marriage to be a ?wonderful relationship? that reflects his love towards us.

A wonderful relationship cannot be easily broken. It is not a simple contract, but draws us together in every way. Paul?s excellent reflection on love states:

?Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.? (1Co 13:4-7)

He concludes this description of love by saying in the next verse: ?Love never fails.? (1Co 13:8)

Covenant relationship gives us the opportunity to reconcile when there is discord. It recognizes that there can be anger and disagreement in families, but love always protects and gives hope. It is an encouragement for us to work on our marriages, and not abandon them. And it recognizes that marriage is a wonderful gift from God.

PBS video mashup honors 'Joy of Painting' host

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? On the heels of PBS' hit Mister Rogers video mashup, a second public TV favorite is getting the star treatment.

PBS said Thursday it has posted a video remix with clips from "The Joy of Painting" instructional series, featuring the late Bob Ross.

The "Happy Painter" remix is from John Boswell, who created the "Garden of Your Mind" video tribute to Fred Rogers. That mashup of clips from "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" has been viewed nearly 6 million times on YouTube.

"The Joy of Painting," still seen in repeats, aired on PBS from 1983 to 1994 with its bushy-haired, mellow-voiced host. Ross died in 1995 of cancer at age 52.

The two PBS Digital Studios mashups are the start of a "PBS icons remixed" series that's intended to get people talking about public TV and to support their local PBS stations.

Boswell, also known as Melodysheep, has done autotuned video pieces featuring prominent scientists including Neil deGrasse Tyson and the late Carl Sagan.

7 tips for surviving a hotel room stay with a toddler | BabyCenter Blog

By T?sa Nicolanti, 2 Wired 2 Tired

It can be fun to travel with toddlers. The joy they feel when experiencing every day things like watching butterflies or squishing sand between their toes is contagious and can make for an unforgettable family trip.

On the other hand, staying in a hotel room with a toddler can be challenging, to say the least. The unfamiliar territory and prevalence of safety hazards can draw a dark cloud over the family vacation.

Here are a few tips that helped me focus on fun, not frustration, when staying in a hotel room with my kids when they were toddlers.

1. Always deadbolt and latch the door whenever you walk in the room. Recently while on vacation, another mom confessed to me that the day before while she was napping, her daughter opened the hotel room door and wandered the halls until she was found by hotel employees. It was only when the mother was startled awake by her in-room phone did she even know her daughter was gone. Always, always deadbolt and latch the door when you are in the room. If the door doesn?t have the top latch or you worry that your toddler may be able to unlock the deadbolt, slide a chair in front of the door. You can also purchase a doorstop alarm which will alert you when the door stop is moved or the door is opened.

2. Search the room for any hazards. Make sure blind cords can?t be reached by tying them up with painters tape, which you can also use to cover outlets and tape washcloths to sharp table edges. Open all of the drawers and take note of their contents. Put up hotel sewing kits. Search the floor and under the bed for any miscellaneous hazards. I?ve heard of parents finding safety pins, pills, and other items on hotel room floors. Check the water temperature in the bathroom and keep coffee makers, hair dryers or curling irons up high or unplugged and off. Keep the bathroom door shut, but make sure toddlers aren?t inside alone or they could lock themselves in. Bring a toilet lock and be aware of slow draining tubs.

3. Buy or bring plastic cups. Most hotels only supply glass drinking cups. The plastic cups will not only be easier for toddlers to drink from but they are also great for making bath time easier and more fun too.

4. Don?t forget the Lysol. Lysol the carpet. Toddlers love to play on the floor and if you can?t keep them on a blanket or a sheet, spray the Lysol to protect against germs.

5. Bring balloons. A small bag of balloons takes up very little space in a suitcase and toddlers love them. Clear a small area to play without any hazards and your toddler will be all smiles. We brought balloons on a trip when my children were 2 and 3 years old and the kids loved bopping the balloons back and forth (or at least trying to) all day long. It saved our sanity during those unfortunate rainy days.

6. Pack books and electronics. When your toddler is napping or falls asleep after a long day at 7 p.m., you?re going to need something to do, especially if your child is one who can?t sleep with the TV on. Use this time to catch up on reading, play Angry Birds or whatever you like to do. The electronics will also be handy on rainy days. Just pull up a few toddler-friendly apps and your little one will play happily until the sun comes back out.

7. Don?t forget a nightlight. When you draw the curtains many hotel rooms are very dark. You can ease any nighttime fears by packing your little one?s favorite nightlight.

Traveling with toddlers is often such a joy but staying in a hotel room with one can sometimes be a real hassle. Hopefully, the tips above will help keep your family vacation full of joyful memories rather than frustrating ones.

BOMBLOG: Dilated Heart: Alison Entrekin and Clarice Lispector by ...

?

Alison Entrekin, translator of a new edition of Lispector?s Near the Wild Heart, on the difficulties and pleasures of translating this particularly difficult and pleasing writer.

?

At the tender age of 23, Clarice Lispector shocked the world of Brazilian publishing with her first book, Near to the Wild Heart, and won the 1944 Gra?a Aranha Prize for best debut novel. This year, Alison Entrekin retranslated it for a New Directions series of Lispector?s work that included three other novels? The Passion According to G.H., A Breath of Life, and Agua Viva?each with a different translator, and edited by Lispector?s biographer and translator of The Hour of the Star, Benjamin Moser. Entrekin answered my questions by email from her home in Brazil.

Sarah Gerard It has often been said that Clarice Lispector?s Portuguese isn?t like the Portuguese anyone was writing in when she published Near to the Wild Heart, and remains unique. What does this mean? How is it different?

Alison Entrekin Clarice was a native speaker of Portuguese, but her writing style definitely isn?t run-of-the-mill. Her turns of phrase are often peculiar, her word choices unconventional, and her syntax can be rather odd at times. Not always, but a lot of the time. There are places in her books where she is entirely idiomatic and makes perfect sense and places where every reader understands something different, because her sentences are open-ended, with words that contain a range of nuances, allowing for several different readings.

SG Different challenges arise translating a work from any one language into another. What are some of the challenges you face translating a work from Portuguese into English?

AE The answer to this question varies with each book and author, but with Clarice the big challenge any translator faces is allowing her to be herself. This is easier said than done. With unconventional writers, there is always a little niggling voice in the back of your mind telling you that readers of the translation are going to attribute any difficulties they have to the translator, not to the original, and I think that this?consciously or unconsciously?leads some translators to over-interpret what the author actually said and serve up a more domesticated version of the writing. I think some past translations of Clarice have tried too hard to ?tidy her up? and have her make perfect sense where she was deliberately open-ended. I tried not to do this. There is almost always a more natural way to say the things she says, but it wouldn?t necessarily be a faithful translation.

SG You received several degrees in creative writing before studying translation. Do you consider yourself first of all a writer or a translator, or do you feel the two are inseparable?

AE For me, they are different things, though I believe my background in creative writing makes me a better translator. It certainly enables me to appreciate why a writer did something one way and not another, which in turn helps me decide what to do with it in the translation.

One of the most difficult things with any translation is finding a way to set aside your own voice, syntax, and word preferences in order to allow the writer?s voice to speak through you. In that sense, you are almost like a medium or an actor?you have to be flexible enough in your own use of language that you can ?channel? or ?impersonate? that writer in the target language. I think studies in creative writing are a wonderful foundation for literary translation, because they give you a lot of perspective and skills that aren?t always taught in translation courses.

SG How does your translation of Near to the Wild Heart differ from Giovanni Pontiero?s? Do you feel you approached it differently? Was his translation useful to you in making decisions about your own?

AE I deliberately avoided reading Pontiero?s translation until after I was done with my own. And even then, I didn?t read it all. I looked at the first few chapters and then just peeked at what he had done in some particularly difficult places to see his take on things, but I think we are completely different translators and tackled things in very different ways. I don?t want to run the man down, as he isn?t here to defend himself, but I feel that he took a few too many liberties with his translation, filling in a lot of Clarice?s little ellipses and making her sound more conventional than she was.

SG Pontiero?s translation ended famously with, ?I shall arise as strong and comely as a young colt,? whereas you?ve translated this as, ?I shall arise as strong and beautiful as a young horse.? Can you explain this subtle difference?

AE In her original text Clarice used bela, which is ?beautiful.? I don?t see any justification for using a synonym for ?beautiful? in this case, as it is a direct match for bela. ?Comely? is a less likely choice, with subtleties of its own that are not present in bela. Clarice could have used a synonym for bela, but didn?t. Likewise, she used cavalo novo in the original, which is literally ?young horse.? She could have used poldro or potro, the Portuguese for ?colt,? but didn?t. My translation is simpler and perhaps less elegant, but I feel it is closer to the original.

SG Lispector was heavily influenced by Spinoza and even included passages from his work in Near to the Wild Heart. To what extent do you need to be familiar with Lispector?s influences in order translate any of her work?

AE Clarice only quotes Spinoza verbatim once in Near to the Wild Heart, and then repeats the phrase slightly differently further on, though she explores some of his themes throughout the novel. Of course, it is useful to know these things, as it can influence the vocabulary you use, but at the end of the day you have to translate what?s on the page, not what?s behind it. In this case, I had to translate Clarice paraphrasing Spinoza, which is different than translating Spinoza himself.

SG Even more than most writers, themes stretch across and seem to morph through Lispector?s books. In translating her first novel, was it difficult not to let your familiarity with her later works inform your choices too much, or was it actually an advantage to have access to those later works?

AE I?m not a specialist in Clarice Lispector, nor have I read all of her books. But I do believe that a work of literature has to be approached as is; that is, as I said before, you have to translate the book that is in front of you. Of course, the better you know a writer, the better equipped you will be to identify their quirks, favorite words, themes, etc. but it probably won?t change the way you translate them.

Ultimately, I think one?s knowledge of the language and culture is still more important than expertise in a particular author (though obviously knowing the author?s oeuvre is better than not knowing it). For example, Clarice often said that so-and-so ?dilated? their eyes in Portuguese, meaning ?opened them wide.? I came across it a few times in Near to the Wild Heart, and have seen it in other stories of hers, too. As far as I have been able to ascertain, it is a quirk of Clarice?s. It?s nice to know, but it didn?t change my approach to it. It is just as odd a word choice in Portuguese as it is in English?pupils dilate, but we don?t usually say that eyes dilate?which is why I rendered it literally in my translation. On the other hand, I discovered quite by accident?while talking to a woman of Clarice?s generation in a doctor?s waiting room?that her use of another word, which I had found quite peculiar on first reading, was actually the current usage back when she was writing, though it isn?t so usual today. Needless to say, I rushed home and changed my translation of that word to something more conventional.

SG Is there anything that you feel didn?t translate well from the Portuguese into the English in Near to the Wild Heart, and if so, what were the obstacles?

AE I don?t really remember anything specific that I was terribly distraught about, but I do feel that, despite my best efforts to preserve her idiosyncrasies, the translation suffered certain losses. To some extent, this is all in a translator?s day?s work, as no language is a mirror copy of another, but with Clarice it is exacerbated by the fact that she frequently used words that could be interpreted in a number of ways. That?s fine when you?re reading her?a discerning reader will register several of those nuances and move on. When you have to translate her, it?s a different story. Often there isn?t a corresponding word or phrase that offers all of the possibilities contained in the original. So you have to choose?which is a very subjective process in itself?and, in so doing, you automatically narrow her down, pin her to what you think is most important.

SG What is the editing process like for translation? Did you and Benjamin Moser work together closely on this, and was there anything about which you strongly disagreed?

AE Editors, in my experience, are very different animals. Some are hands-off, some are hands-on, but most of them don?t have access to the original, so anything they say or suggest is speculative. It was completely different with Ben, as he knows Clarice?s work back to front in the original. I found the process a lot simpler, because I didn?t have to explain the things that I would have had to if he didn?t speak Portuguese. He was a thorough reader and asked pertinent questions, but I didn?t feel that he was overly intrusive as an editor. I think we?re pretty much on the same page in terms of approach. I liked his translation of The Hour of the Star, incidentally, which I think is telling.

I did consult another colleague?Daniela Travaglini?heavily and feel badly because I forgot to include a translator?s note thanking her for her invaluable input. I have worked with Dani for years, and she is my go-to person whenever I am not sure about something in Portuguese. I have lived in Brazil for 16 years, but the very nature of my work means that I am forever stumbling across aspects of the language with which I am not familiar?new words or turns of phrase?and I always take my questions to Dani first. She is Brazilian and I am Australian, but we both know the other?s language very well, which sets up a nice tension between the two languages as we hash things out. With this translation, I found myself asking her over and over, ?Is this word/phrase/sentence as jarring to you as it is to me?? Whenever she was unsure about something, I would write off to another four people simultaneously, to get a range of opinions. On several occasions I got four completely different answers, which just goes to show how difficult Clarice is to pin down. In the end, the decision was mine, but I felt better knowing that I?d exhausted numerous possibilities and that my choices were well-informed.

Do We Need Carbs For Energy? | Ultimate City Fitness. London's ...

The answer to this is irrefutably?YES!

The end!

Well actually it?s not quite that simple and if optimum health and fat loss is your goal, then read on. This post was inspired by an?article I read in the Metro yesterday, but I felt it needed some perspective on how we at Ultimate City Fitness view the subject.

There are various camps sitting on different sides of the fence on the intake of carbohydrates.

One side will say eat none and focus on higher intakes of proteins and fats. Another to make it your primary macronutrient (with protein and fat being the other two) and eat lots of it as shown in most supposed dietary food pyramids over the years. Others to focus on eating the right types in the right amounts. And a whole host of other combinations.

Carbs can be broken down into three types; Simple carbohydrates (sugars), complex carbohydrates (starches), non-starch polysaccharides (fibre).

Q :: Out of the three there, can you spot the one that we should keep to a minimum?

Q :: Out of the three there can you spot the one that can be linked (with some other factors) to many degenerative diseases, including obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and so on and so on?

Q :: Out of the three there can you spot the one that the Western diet on a national scale has got to love and will find it in whatever form it can to get a ?sweet? fix? (think many cereals, so called health food bars, juices, smoothies, low-fat foods, and other well marketed and profitable processed foods).

Q :: Out of the three can you spot the spanner in the works of looking great and feeling great and the one that gives it?s two siblings a hard ride as they are all classed as carbs, but this one is?definitely?usually the dark sheep of the family?

Yes its fibre?.. just kidding, its sugars, it it?s many forms and guises.

Life is about balance right? A little sugar won?t kill us, it?s just the culmination of a little sugar in many places through the day, just might.

I saw a fruit smoothie drink yesterday that contained 2.5 apples, 2/3?rds of a banana, about an orange, 1.5 mangos?.. that?s about 6 servings of fruit and equated to 11 spoons of sugar in a 450ml bottle. This is marketed as healthy!!

On a side note fruit is great, just eat only a couple of pieces a day and make sure it is low glycemic (has low impact on blood sugars). Don?t drink lots of juice (all the sweetness of fruit but without the fibre and properties of chewing it to start the digestive process) and expect to lose fat!

On another side note (yes I go off on lots of tangents, a spoon of sugar equates to roughly 5g, so when you see a label that states a drink contains 12g of carbohydrate per 100 ml which sugars and the drink is 450ml, then multiply 12g by 4.5 ((450ml divided by 100ml)) and you get 54g of sugar. Divide that by the spoon size of 5g and you get practically 11 spoonfuls!

I love it when people have no sugar in their tea all day and then have about 3 glasses of healthy juice??.. Advice go back to one sugar in tea and have water and no juice ;-)

Now apply that spoon conversion rate to whatever drink or low-fat yoghurt or cereal you buy! Another tangent ? I told you I go off on tangents ? is that cereal usually shows a serving size as 60g. If you EVER eat just 60g then I?d be amazingly surprised. Calculate more on 200g and you?ll be close and then add the sugar from the lactose in the milk!)

So now maybe you have got the hint that is best to avoid and cut out most sugars. Yes once in a while as a treat is ok, but only once in a while if you enjoy feeling on top of your game and getting leaner.

But just a final subtle reminder;

So the ones to focus on? As a rule it?s carbohydrates as they came out of the ground or off a tree. Eat raw if you can, and if not cook, but don?t over cook?as then you lose many of the great micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc) that are contained within them, as well as other small changes that occur which are best avoided.

The Metro article I sited at the start is looking in the right direction here and recommends some good choices. However in our opinion grains are best avoided. Yes this gets us in trouble with the grain lovers and bread?fanatics, but we?ll stand our ground here. We work with many, many clients that have cut them out and feel much better as a result. There is too much grey area over what constitutes healthy brown bread over the dreaded white bread ;-) Marketing has come such a way now that they?ll say anything to get you to buy that loaf, so use your loaf and cut it out for a few weeks and see how you feel. Simple really, cut it out, keep a food diary, note your mood on waking up and through the day and then see what it says.

The grey area continues with cereals. I LOVE CEREALS! However I have felt and looked so much better since I stop waking up to them. Am I alone? NO. The marketing of cereals is awesome, as it makes us believe what we actually really want to believe which is that they are healthy, low-fat, whole grain, with added fortified vitamins, and fibre and whatever else. Bottom line is to swap them for another breakfast and see how you feel through the day. We grew up with these bowls of yummyness (many of them are like eating sweets now) and the fact that you have to pour a load of dairyness over them does not help matters, especially when it is skimmed milk (which takes the fat out of the milk which changes the glycemic impact of the altered milk to high glycemic (normal milk is low GI). Thus making skim milk a sugar shot!). Yes Weetafix and Dreaded Wheat are not so bad, but cut them out and see how you feel.

My favourite carbs are green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, butternut squash (tastes good on a cottage pie instead of the higher glycemic potatoes), lentils, wild rice and peas. I personally like oats as well, but when I am looking to get it good shape for a photo shoot or suchlike I will cut them out. There is a?visible and recorded change in body fat when I do this.

Those favourites are all starchy carbs and mostly contain a nice amount of fibre (great for slowing down the?absorption?of the food and helping with transit through the digestive system).

Keep portions to a sensible size (apart from the green leafy veg, eat as much of that as you want!)when?it comes to the sweet potato, rice, butternut squash, oats and lentils. If you sit at a desk all day and only exercise three times a week then chances are you don?t need lots and lots of energy as athletes do. If you take in excess calories from even good carbohydrate sources, then you will store them in your fuel tank for later.

In women this fuel tank tends to sit on their hips and butt and on guys it?s out front in the stomach, covering over the six-pack (that we all have). Fat is out natural store/fuel tank, but we don?t need it and unless you like it then eat sensibly and keep portions to about a fist sized portion.

Make sure it is combined with a QUALITY protein source and some QUALITY good fats which are both essential to life and keep the metabolism fired up, providing us with what we need to be healthy, energetic, in the best of moods and looking great as WE ARE SUPPOSED TO!

It?s quality that is key and that?s where followers of the Atkins diet fall foul as they can see it all as an excuse to load up on the bad fats. It is essential to get the right amount of greens to offset the protein you eat as the alkaline properties of the veg offset the acidic nature of the protein (this is why people start to smell on the high protein diets as they go into a state called ketosis which raises the ph of the blood and is not healthy).

Alkaline foods are important and we recommend using Greens to help with this balance (yes in the ideal world you would eat loads of green veg, but we don?t live on farms and it?s not practical so use a supplement as it is meant to be used and supplement an already healthy diet with some additional goodness!)

I wanted to point out a special mention for potatoes. Yes those lovely things that taste so good chopped up into fries, or baked in their jackets, or roasted, or boiled or turned into crisps. They are lovely are they not! They are also a starch or complex carbohydrate, but not all starches are created equally.

A starch is basically lots of molecules of glucose stacked together in a complex form. Some starches break down over a longer period of time into glucose and are then absorbed into the blood stream or metabolised as needed by us (these are the ones i mentioned above and they are the ones to aim to eat).

The ones like potatoes, pasta, brown bread, etc get broken down very fast due to them being of a high GI and so if the glucose comes at too much of a rush for the body to handle then the body will store the excess in those handy fuel tanks again. It will also need to release insulin to pull blood sugars down and this over time causes insulin resistance that leads to many conditions, the main one being diabetes.

If the potatoes are processed then this compounds this bad situation and adds other nasties into the mix like hydrogenated oils, trans fats, additives, etc.

Potatoes are a treat, not a health food. Pasta and bread are processed foods. AVOID.

Just a last little note of interest. Without protein and good fats in the diet we will die as they are essential. Without carbs in the diet we will be ok, as long as the quality of the protein and the fats are of the best quality! Food for thought??. I think so!

For much more info like this then I?d recommend having a look at the 14 Day FAT FURNACE programme. Yes we market it as a fat loss plan, but it is a wolf in sheep?s clothing? or possibly a sheep in wolves clothing as it has an underpinning message of getting healthy, energetic, sleeping well, feeling great and burning off those fuel tanks that you really don?t need now do you!

It?s on a special limited time offer at the moment of 40% off the recommended price and it?s the new version 7 (lucky for some) so if you like what I have written here, then I feel sure you?ll love that!

Imagine The Possibilities With These Home Improvement Ideas ...

If you hate painting and paneling, try wallpaper. Wallpapering your home is a very simple and inexpensive way to add a new look to any room. Be cautious of which paper you choose, as some are much more difficult to remove than others, in the case you may not like it in the future.

If your walls are in bad condition, consider using wallpaper instead of paint. Wallpaper can hide all manner of damage on a wall, like hairline cracks, grease marks, chips, pen marks, etc. Paint on the other-hand, can draw attention to even the smallest defect on an interior wall. Wallpaper also have the added advantage of making a room feel cozier.

When you are trying to narrow down which home improvements to tackle first, a good plan is to make a wish list first, of everything that you would do if you could do it all. Go through your home and figure out what needs fixed and make a note of each item. Then you can begin to prioritize what items are the most pressing and what you can afford to fix first.

If you need a drastic change to the outside of your home, simple landscaping can work wonders. You will see that implementing a garden or two around the home, pruning bushes and trees, and cleaning the yard really creates a great look around the home that doesn?t even take much to do.

If you can?t stand the smell of wet paint, try mixing a few drops of real vanilla extract into each gallon of paint?so long as you aren?t using white. The lovely smell of vanilla will overpower the paint fumes, so painting a room or piece of furniture can become a much more pleasant task.

When using nails to join wood surfaces, such as those in door frames, try reinforcing them with glue or liquid nails. By doing this, the wood will be reinforced with a much tighter bond than normal and strengthen the quality of your construction, which will last for many years without the need for constant repairs.

If you want to do contracting, you need to make sure that you have the proper insurance before you begin. There are a lot of people who choose to do home improvement jobs without being properly insured who then end up owing a lot of money when something goes wrong that they did not even consider.

While new home builders are now required to install only low-flow toilets, older homes rarely have efficient plumbing; an older toilet can use more than three gallons of water per flush; a new low-flow commode will use less than half of that amount, making it a wise investment that can save money on your water costs.

Keep yourself covered by building to code. If you secure the necessary permits prior to the start of construction you will have peace of mind down the road. If you decide to sell your house in the future you may be required to disclose whether your remodel has been built to code. It also covers you against shoddy work by contractors. If you have a permit, an inspector will make frequent visits to make sure the work is being done properly.

When doing a web search looking for a contractor to hire, do specific niche searches. Many contractors work in niche aspects of home improvement and can do an excellent job for you. These contractors have the experience and expertise that is required for many of the niche home improvement jobs.

When you hire a contractor to work on a home improvement project, make sure that he is holding a current license and that he has insurance for his employees. This is important for your protection, in case you have a legal dispute about the quality of the work. In addition, if his employees are not covered by his insurance, you might be financially responsible for any injuries that an employee incurs, while he is on your premises.

Improper home improvement can be very troublesome, but with some research and some hard work, you can do it. It just takes research and asking a professional when you need to on what to do to reach your goals. Do yourself a favor and try using the above tips to help properly improve your home.

If you want the best roofing contractors in springfield mo be sure to be methodical and choose the right business for you.

Four Rules To Maximize Outsourcing In The Age of Global Commerce

For entrepreneurs, the $64,000 question is, as $64,000 suggests, all about the money.

That goes double for building an effective and productive team ? one that allows you to run your business anywhere; from your home, office, or while on the move.

The fact is, it?s more financially efficient to hire an outsourced team than to hire a full-time staff. Data from Drexel University?s Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship shows that the real cost of a full-time, salaried employee is roughly twice the amount you?ll pay a contractor who does the same work.

For us small business owners, especially those of us who want to stay mobile and flexible, that?s where a good outsourcing program can help. It?s no secret that team-building via the outsourcing route can be affordable and effective but here are four rules?maximize your outsourcing campaign:

Rule 1: Do a trial run

Let?s say, you?re looking for a software developer (try a site like oDesk.com to find good candidates). Once you have screened a pool of candidates, have each handle a small project first to gauge their productivity. That will save you money and time before signing anyone to a long-term contract. To test their off-site capabilities, have the contractor use Skypeor a similar mobile communication technology.

Rule 2: Emphasize clarity and transparency

To find good candidates you won?t be seeing on a day to day basis, communication is key. Make sure your contractor knows exactly what is expected, how the work should be done, and how you?ll communicate on a regular basis (again, Skype is the preferred option here ? it?s more personal than smartphone or email.) Make sure you have a clear project brief written up that both parties read and agree to before you move forward.

Rule 3: Start with your technology or marketing needs

By and large, technology and marketing outsourcing are the easiest (and most affordable) places to launch your mobile outsourcing campaign. Building a website, printing business cards, coding software, or creating a social media campaign can be done for the least amount of cash outlay, but it will take up significant and valuable chunks of time on your own. So make sure you catalog your process, and weed out what works and what doesn?t with your technology-outsourcing program. Keep what works best (and get your contractors to add to your training and process guide) and then make sure you use it as you add more contractors in other areas like accounting or marketing.

Rule 4: Watch out for language issues

Mobile outsourcing isn?t clean-cut, and nowhere is that more true than with potential language barriers. You might find the most talented software programmer in India or the best copywriter in China. Spain's king loses WWF title over elephant hunt

The World Wildlife Fund's branch in Spain has ousted King Juan Carlos as its honorary president ? a title he'd held since 1968 ? after deciding his recent elephant hunting safari was incompatible with its goal of conserving endangered species.

The announcement Saturday was the latest in a string of bad news for Spain's royal family, which has been embarrassed by legal and other scandals.

The fund said in a statement that "although such hunting is legal and regulated" it had "received many expressions of distress from its members and society in general." It said members voted at a meeting Saturday in Madrid to "to get rid of the honorary President" by a substantial majority of 226 votes to 13.

The Royal Palace declined immediate comment on the announcement.

Many Spaniards were dumbfounded when news broke in April that the king had made a secret journey to hunt elephants in Botswana even though it was widely known he was president of the Spanish branch of the fund.

Such an opulent indulgence also angered Spaniards at a time when national unemployment hovers around 25 percent, the economy is contracting and there are fears the country may need an international financial bailout.

The Spanish public learned of the safari only after the king had to fly back in a private jet to receive emergency medical attention for a broken hip suffered during the trip.

In an unprecedented act of royal contrition, a sheepish Juan Carlos apologized, saying as he left the hospital: "I am very sorry. I made a mistake. It won't happen again."

It was a poignant moment because the royal family had been under intense media scrutiny for all the wrong reasons.

The king's son-in-law, Inaki Urdangarin, is a suspect in a corruption case, accused of having used his position to embezzle several million euros in public contracts through a supposedly not-for-profit foundation he'd set up.

Over Easter, the king's 13-year-old grandson, Felipe Juan Froilan, shot himself in the foot with a shotgun, even though Spanish law dictates you must be 14 to handle a gun.

The king on Tuesday decided to take a pay cut in solidarity with civil servants who are to lose their traditional Christmas bonuses as part of the government's most recent austerity drive.

The salaries of Juan Carlos and Crown Prince Felipe will be reduced about 7 percent ? to about 272,000 euros ($334,000) and 131,000 euros ($160,000) respectively ? in line with government policy, the Royal Palace said.

The king and prince acted voluntarily in cutting their salaries, the palace said.
