The Evolution of Art and Culture at NXNE + 7 Good Bands - Zouch

My first and only prior trip to NXNE was back in 2007. ?Five years really is an eternity when it comes to digital culture. This year I was really looking forward to learning about changes in the music industry and digital media space, and getting a feel for how the event itself has evolved.

It was nice to see that NXNE is still based in the same hotel (Hyatt took over the property, but it functions the same). King Street West?in Toronto is the perfect location because most music venues are walking distance, which ?makes it feel like we?re taking over the city. I love that.

After two full-fledged experiences at NXNE, I now call it a must-have experience for any music or film focused creative, entrepreneur, or band. Whatever festival/conference pass they give bands is well-worth showing up and playing a set of music pro bono. Attending so many shows at so many great venues is a dreamlike experience. With the music bracelet you can see 800 bands in some of the best venues in Canada for $50. That works out to $0.06 per band. Good deal.

If you?re inclined to learn about new media and the music industry you shouldn?t pass up the?opportunity?to attend the?NXNE interactive?conferences. It?s easy to network there. I feel like I met and discussed ideas with all the right people even though I?m not much for schmoozing. It becomes easy to talk because everyone?s mind is alight with ideas. The vibe is friendly and authentic.

A cautionary note to bands:?Many bands neglect to promote their shows and end up with no audience. The picture below shows an awesome bluesrock band from San Francisco called?Papa?s Garage?playing almost exclusively for Zouch (and an old dude on a stool). It was a riot! There are a zillion venues and time slots, so be assertive if you want to be heard.

If you?re in from out of town make sure to stay awhile to soak up the experience. And if you?re part of a project don?t just show up for one day to plop some swag down on a random table and expect to get noticed.

The liberation of creativity

The panel entitled The Rise of the ?Artistpreneur? & Entertainment Industry 2.0?was a bit of a letdown. But a rapper named?D-Sisive had some cool stories about how he recently turned a corner in his life by taking the business aspect of his music more seriously.

The panel carried on with anecdotes, and overall the message was: ?We?re really cool rapper guys, you should probably take your music as seriously as us if you want to succeed?.

They debated the pros and cons of ?common issues like whether or not you should give your music away for free, arriving at no?consensus, providing only a glimmer of insight.?However, a take away here is just how easy it is to try all sorts of promotional ideas in the digital space. As a general rule hip hop artists are the best at promotion (and metal bands are the bloody worst).

Back in 2007 the idea of podcasting wasn?t well understood. NXNE even had then?CBC3?radio host?Grant Lawrence on a panel to explain what a podcast was! I remember it vividly.?We attendees were ravenous with the desire to learn. ?The experience even inspired me to start my own underground podcast in 2009. It?s rather easy now to broadcast music or podcasts across many channels, so the focus can really be on quality content.

Over the past five years it feels as though the onus has been taken off the technical aspects, and is graduating to the artistic side of things. This trend is liberating creativity. An artist like D-Sisive is able to focus mostly on writing and producing new tracks, doing what he loves to do, without being at the mercy of technological barriers or a corporate agenda outside of his control.

Saul Colt?s?Startup Marketing: Techcrunch is not a Marketing Plan?was the most well put together presentation I saw this year. He told stories about crazy things he?s done in marketing.

My favorite was a contest where he asked people to submit their guess at what the BEST SONG IN THE WORLD is. First prize was $1 MILLION DOLLARS. Second prize was a box of cereal.?Of course nobody got the answer right, but there were over 200 2nd place winners and Saul sent each of them a little box of cereal stuffed with a $5 or $10 gift card for iTunes or Starbucks.?The overall buzz created by a contest like this can be well worth the investment of a couple hundred cheap prizes.

Saul?s message was that if you want to start a sustainable business, you need to be?continually creative and aggressive with marketing, and that it is much better to work to inspire people than it is to simply try to influence them. I knew it would be an enlightening experience to listen to a man who bills himself as ?The Smartest Man In The World?.

How to Start a Start-up?was a panel of particular personal?interest to me. Since soon after the launch of the Zouch website on September 30th 2010, we have been looking at ZOUCH?as a startup company (even though Jeff Campagna and my idea for Zouch Magazine wasn?t exactly born that way).

This panel was loaded with super-strong entrepreneurial minds. I had the chance to have a conversation with super-dynamo entrepreneur and?Ycombinator?graduate?Michael Litt?(whom I now refer to as ?The Waterloo Wonder?). I had some unique private questions for him about starting a company and he graciously gave me advice to ponder.

Litt?s?message was that a good founder must be a person who has the will and the skill to act on his or her good ideas, as well as the ability to pass that energy on to others. I suppose with any new media project there must be both a solid technical component, and a good socio-cultural component, and that a good founder must focus on being able to handle both of these. Whereas, in the past being so versatile may not have been so crucial.

Participants and panels were more business and entrepreneurship focused this year, as compared with 2007. The age of technological emancipation we are in now seems to be slightly shifting the focus of artistic talent. Again, I feel like artists and writers today have a better chance of being successful?entrepreneurs while remaining true to their artistic vision (this is exactly how and why?Zouch Magazine??was born).

I don?t remember there being as much buzz about startups at NXNE in 2007. The explosion of technology products of late seems to have led to many people feeling empowered enough to start their own entrepreneurial ventures in web media spaces.?On one hand all of this technology is great because artists can collaborate more easily with new people with whom they share related visions and complimentary talents. On the other hand, it provides more competition.

In my humble opinion, in order to create good art and literature, it?s important for the creative mind to be released from the common day to day competitive feelings of the business world. Art is supposed to be about connecting with your true voice or your ?soul?, and then showing the world something unique. Good concepts for art and literature have a unique power to guide culture, and they are most often?created from a point of serene introspection.?If artists become more and more business-minded, what happens to the art? ?Eternal Summers?have a unique sound. I?d say they are your true pioneers of post-punk?pop, or something good like that.

KOVAK playing El Mocambo for NXNE 2012 ?Power pop UK sensation KOVAK?were a sexy sight to behold at El Mocambo.

The punky?LA band BLEACHED drew a big crowd at the The Silver Dollar and didn?t disappoint.

Football Ferns held by Australia after late strike

New Zealand's Olympic Games-bound Football Ferns' bid to end another frustrating winless streak was thwarted in dramatic circumstances at Wollongong?tonight when Australia salvaged a 1-1 draw with an equaliser in added time.

The Ferns were less than a minute away from recording a win on Australian soil for the first time in 21 years - and only victory against their trans-Tasman rivals since 1994 - when defender Thea Slatyer's header thudded past Jenny Bindon.

It was a cruel outcome for the Ferns goalkeeper after she had protected New Zealand's lead with two superb saves as Australia applied massive pressure over the final 20 minutes at WIN Stadium.

Slatyer's goal cancelled out Hayley Moorwood's diving header in the 50^th minute and provided some solace for the Australians, who surprisingly failed to qualify for the Olympics.

Had New Zealand held on they would have ended another significant time frame without success after they beat Asian powerhouse China for the first time last week -- after 12 previous defeats -- before sweeping the two-test series.

Now they must recover from the anguish of coming so close to claiming another coveted scalp and strive to win the series at the same venue on Wednesday.

They then head to Switzerland for three friendly games to complete their preparations.

Although his players were despondent at the final whistle, Ferns coach Tony Readings was upbeat about a performance that at least ended a 22-match losing streak against the Matildas.

"We're all disappointed not to win that match after the chance we gave ourselves but it's all about the Olympics and today was another step forward," he said.

"We're asking for improved performances in every match prior to the Olympics and we got that."

Moorwood had the Ferns on the front foot when she met Anna Green's cross and deflected the ball past Matildas' captain Melissa Barbieri, a deserved lead after New Zealand were unusually competitive with the world's No.10-ranked nation.

Australia barely threatened in the lead-up before the Chelsea-based midfielder wheeled away in celebration but they finished strongly to frequently test a scrambling Ferns defence during a frenetic final 20 minutes.

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A monsignor who oversaw hundreds of priests in the Philadelphia Archdiocese was found guilty on Friday of one count of endangering the welfare of a child, making him the first senior U.S. Roman Catholic Church official to be convicted for covering up child sex abuse.

The jury acquitted Monsignor William Lynn on two other counts - conspiracy and another charge of child endangerment -after 10 weeks of testimony in a trial that raised questions about personal responsibility and institutional constraints within the church hierarchy.

Removing his black clerical jacket but leaving on his collar, a stoic Lynn, 61, was led out of the courtroom and into custody by deputy sheriffs as his family members wept.

"Every juror there wanted to do justice. ... We wanted to do what was right," jury foreman Isa Logan, 35, a bank customer service representative, told reporters outside the courtroom.

Sentencing for Lynn, who faces up to seven years in prison, was set for August 13 by Judge M. Teresa Sarmina.

"This is a monumental victory for the named and un-named victims," said Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams. "This was about evil men who did evil things to children."

While the district attorney's office argued that Lynn should immediately be jailed, the judge said she would consider house arrest if the defense asked for it.

The jury deliberated 13 days before reaching the mixed decision in the trial of Lynn, who, prosecutors charged, covered up child sex abuse allegations, often by transferring priests to unsuspecting parishes.

Lawyers for Lynn said they planned to appeal the case.

"He's really upset," said one of his attorneys, Jeff Lindy. "He's upset, he's crushed. He didn't want anything other than to help kids, he's crushed about this."

STRONG MESSAGE

Barbara Dorris, outreach director for Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said the verdict put the Church on notice that it can no longer "shield and protect" abusive priests and expect to get away with it.

"This is a strong message, and we're grateful for that message that kids' safety has to come first," she said.

The case against Lynn was part of a broader indictment against clergy in the Philadelphia Archdiocese. One of the priests, Reverend James Brennan, was tried along with Lynn and faced charges of attempted rape and child endangerment. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the counts against Brennan.

A third priest who was scheduled to go on trial with Lynn and Brennan pleaded guilty at the last minute to sexually assaulting a 10-year-old altar boy at church in 1999.

The trial re-focused attention on a sweeping sex abuse scandal that has rocked the Church, costing billions in settlements, driving prominent U.S. dioceses into bankruptcy and testing the faith of Roman Catholics.

"A verdict like this has to be regarded as very important," said Martin Guggenheim, a professor at New York University School of Law who specializes in children's rights and family law. "From now on, the Lynns of this world are going to act in the knowledge that there is a real risk of being arrested if they don't do enough."

Lynn's job was supervising 800 priests, including investigating sex abuse claims from 1992 to 2004, in the nation's sixth largest archdiocese, with 1.5 million members.

Instead of looking out for children, prosecutors said, he chose to protect the Church from scandal and potential loss of financial support.

The defense said Lynn tried to address cases of pedophile priests, compiling a list in 1994 of 35 accused predators and writing memos to suggest treatment and suspensions.

He was hampered because he could merely make recommendations to his boss, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, the defense said. Bevilacqua died in January at age 88.

LYNN'S TESTIMONY KEY TO VERDICT

According to Lynn's testimony, which the jury foreman said was key to reaching a verdict, the cardinal said any mention of an accused priest's move from a parish should cite health reasons, never the accusations. Testimony also showed Bevilacqua ordered the list of accused priests be destroyed, although a lone copy was found in an archdiocese safe.

Prosecutors used that list to show the Church was aware of predatory priests and covered up their existence, while the defense used the list to argue it showed Lynn attempting to stop the problem.

"This has been a difficult time for all Catholics, especially victims of sexual abuse," the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said in a statement. "The lessons of the last year have made our Church a more vigilant guardian of our people's safety."

The U.S. scandal erupted in 1992 with a series of sex abuse cases uncovered in the Archdiocese of Boston that helped encourage other victims of abuse to come forward.

Some 3,000 civil lawsuits alleging abuse were filed in the United States between 1984 and 2009. An unknown number of complaints - believed to be vastly greater - were settled privately, often with confidentiality agreements, experts say.

The Church has paid out some $2 billion in settlements to victims, bankrupting a handful of dioceses.

Hefty multi-million dollar sums were paid out by Catholic archdioceses in Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles. The Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware, declared bankruptcy in 2009, and the Diocese of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, did so in 2011.

At issue in Lynn's trial was whether he could or should have taken action outside the Church's hierarchy and whether strict obedience to its elders was defensible.

Logan, the jury foreman and a U.S. Army veteran, said Lynn had a personal responsibility to report the abuse to the proper authorities.

"I am a human being before I'm a soldier, so if he's telling me something to do that is incorrect, then I'll be court-martialed before I do something like that," he said.

The decision comes as another jury in Pennsylvania is deciding an even higher-profile child sex abuse case, against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Some scientists say they might have even been made by the much-maligned Neanderthals, but others disagree.

Testing the coating of paintings in 11 Spanish caves, researchers found that one is at least 40,800 years old, which is at least 15,000 years older than previously thought. That makes them older than the more famous French cave paintings by thousands of years.

Scientists dated the Spanish cave paintings by measuring the decay of uranium atoms, instead of traditional carbon-dating, according to a report released Thursday by the journal Science. The paintings were first discovered in the 1870s.

The oldest of the paintings is a red sphere from a cave called El Castillo. About 25 outlined handprints in another cave are at least 37,300 years old. Slightly younger paintings include horses.

Cave paintings are "one of the most exquisite examples of human symbolic behavior," said study co-author Joao Zilhao, an anthropologist at the University of Barcelona. "And that, that's what makes us human."

There is older sculpture and other portable art. Before the latest test, the oldest known cave paintings were those France's Chauvet cave, considered between 32,000 and 37,000 years old.

What makes the dating of the Spanish cave paintings important is that it's around the time when modern humans first came into Europe from Africa.

Study authors say they could have been from modern man decorating their new digs or they could have been the working of the long-time former tenant of Europe: the Neanderthal. Scientists said Neanderthals were in Europe from about 250,000 years ago until about 35,000 years ago. Modern humans arrived in Europe about 41,000 to 45,000 years ago ? with some claims they moved in even earlier ? and replaced Neanderthals.

"There is a strong chance that these results imply Neanderthal authorship," Zilhao said. "But I will not say we have proven it because we haven't."

In a telephone press conference, Zilhao said Neanderthals recently have gotten "bad press" over their abilities. They decorated their tools and bodies. So, he said, they could have painted caves.

But there's a debate in the scientific community about Neanderthals. Other anthropologists say Zilhao is in a minority of researchers who believe in more complex abilities of Neanderthals.

Eric Delson, a paleoanthropologist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and John Shea at Long Island's Stony Brook University said the dating work in the Science paper is compelling and important, but they didn't quite buy the theory that Neanderthals could have been the artists.

"There is no clear evidence of paintings associated with Neanderthal tools or fossils, so any such evidence would be surprising," Delson said. He said around 41,000 years ago Neanderthals were already moving south in Europe, away from modern man and these caves.

Shea said it is more likely that modern humans were making such paintings in Africa even earlier, but the works didn't survive because of the different geology on the continent.

"The people who came in to Europe were very much like us. They used art, they used symbols," Shea said. "They were not like Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble."
