Every chronic back pain sufferer knows how painful, annoying, and debilitating the sore back is. The majority of people believe there is no cure for the back pain. Many rely on pain killers, back surgeries, and physical therapy. For others, it is chiropractor and acupuncture visits, sometimes herbal remedies, supplements, possibly yoga or fitness clubs.
As common and helpful these approaches are they do not heal the back. From early childhood we are conditioned to rely on specialists to help us ? and, in many cases, it is a right thing to do. But what we are not taught to do is to be responsible for our own health. With ever increasing health care costs, this attitude is gradually changing but it will take time. One essential thing to remember:
You are the person who cares about your body and health the most.
If all the treatments for your back pain don?t work or work only temporary, you should make some fundamental changes. One of the worst myths related to the back pain (or any musculoskeletal pain, for that matter) is that it hurts because something is really wrong with the back. With rare exceptions, the real underlying cause of your back pain is not the body?s frailty but your lifestyle. More specifically, what you do for motion, what you eat, and what you believe in.
These are three areas you need to work on: posture, diet, and attitude.
Many skeptics will say at this moment ?it cannot be that simple?. ?Not so fast, just bear with me for a few moments. I am going to show you why these 3 changes are the most important things to do for your back. After all, for many years I was one of your fellow back pain sufferers and if I could do it, you can too.
Change your posture ? first step to pain free back
Postural deviations, whether you have back pain or not, are the simplest ? and the most overlooked signals of compromised musculoskeletal system. No matter how good your diet is, or how much you exercise (that?s right, many athletes experience back pain and have compromised postures too), or how many supplements or anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers you take, you will not heal the back unless you improve your posture.
The back ? and all body systems with it, cannot operate properly if you are out of alignment. I don?t mean just a spinal column misalignment a chiropractor can manipulate. It is helpful but it is also limited. Muscles move the bones, not the other way around. Our body works as a unit and no amount of cracking your chiropractor may do will restore the proper muscle function and heal your back.
Only motion, and a proper motion at that, can re-train the muscles and gradually restore correct posture alignment. By doing it, you will allow not only your back to heal and put your joints in the proper positions, but improve breathing and allow all other organs and systems to work better.
The question is, how one can change posture and what is the proper motion for the back pain?
This is where Egoscue? pain free method comes in. It treats a body as a whole, re-teaching all muscles to restore their intended functions with very simple but effective exercises, targeted specifically for each individual posture deviations.? The more those functions are restored, the better you back will feel. The cool thing is you don?t need to have a perfect posture before you start noticing dramatic results.
To get started, take a look at your posture. You can read more about it at: http://uprightposturefitness.com/blog/2012/03/26/three-types-of-posture-deviation/. You can also get much more in depth information from the Pain Free book. It will give you a very different perspective on what to do about the back, neck, shoulder, hip, or knee pain. Try exercises from the book and see if they work. Then find an Egoscue? practitioner. You will be on your way to eliminating back pain with posture changes.
Stay tuned for how food and attitude affect the back pain. Next post will be all about diet and supplements.
Be active, live pain free.
