SCARBOROUGH, Me. ? Students at a high school in Maine are taking action after the school board proposed a parking fee for students. Parents, students and taxpayers are signing a petition against the idea of students paying $50 to $100 a year for parking.
They say they?re tired of all the extra fees. Jack Sullivan is senior class president, plays sports and is in honor society. Now, he supports a boycott.
?We feel that we?ve already been feed enough through athletic fees the past couple of years, that this is just too much for us to pay,? Sullivan said.
Adults agree that the extra fees are unnecessary.
?I think this will lead to paying to go to a game that we pay for, paying parking to go to a program in high school. I think it?s just the top of the iceberg if we give into this,?? said Scarborough resident Kay Dillon.
The school board?s chairman says he understands the frustrations, but the school has to make up for lost revenue in order to keep all of its departments and teachers.
?We have roughly a $37 million dollar budget with revenue coming in ? some from the state, obviously about a million dollars less than in the past ? some from fees and various things, and then the bulk, obviously, from the property tax base,? said Robert Mitchell, Scarborough School Board.
Students say until they can reach a compromise, the lot will remain empty. They will present the petition at a public meeting Thursday, and see if anyone has come up with an alternative solution.
